Helpful Guidelines & Reminders

What clients need to know to maintain benefits and stay in compliance.

Updating Information

Please update TMS of any change in circumstances that may affect a Social Security benefit, including:

  • Change of Address
  • Change of Living Arrangement
  • Start or Stop Work
  • Marriage or Divorce
  • Change in citizenship or immigration status

Help complete the required Social Security Forms. Often, information is needed that TMS can’t provide. Wet signatures are required on most forms, even if they are scanned digitally. Please complete, sign, and return all forms to your Account Manager promptly to avoid delays in processing.

Spending & Budgets

Receipts: Receipts are required for all disbursements over $200.

Board & Care - P&I Ledgers: Ledgers are to be submitted monthly. Upon receipt of a ledger, provided funds are available, TMS will replenish the clients' P&I balances up to $200. P&I ledgers can be submitted as many times as needed during the month. Negative ledgers are not allowed. If you need to make a purchase that exceeds $200, please contact the client’s account manager to arrange the disbursement.

Budgets: TMS creates a budget for each client to ensure consistent access to essential needs, such as food and personal spending funds, throughout the month. As part of the budgeting process, TMS will establish a weekly or biweekly disbursement schedule of personal spending funds to promote financial stability. TMS will not release a client’s full monthly benefit to them or a third party at one time.

Wages & Other Government Benefits

TMS can manage wages if a client chooses. Wages directed to TMS will be deposited into their trust account and incorporated into their monthly budget. All wages received by TMS will be reported to Social Security on their behalf.

Even if the client does not elect wage management, TMS will report their wages to Social Security as long as pay stubs are provided after each pay period. Regular and timely reporting helps reduce the risk of overpayments or underpayments and supports continued benefit eligibility. All earned income must be reported to Social Security.

TMS can also manage other government benefits, including VA benefits, Railroad Retirement benefits, CSF annuities, OPM, and PERS. Arrangements must be made for TMS to receive these benefits, as they are not automatically directed to us. Clients must inform their Account Manager if they receive any benefits in addition to SSI and SSA.
